Create Every Day

Every day for seven months - 212 consecutive days - I created something and posted the creation to this page. This was a fantastic experience that helped me learn more about my creative process and the personal goals I have for my creativity. I'm very happy to have chosen this project for myself, and I'm very pleased with most of the ideas I came up with during that time. I am glad, however, to have decided to finish the project. Editing, uploading, and posting my creations (the most difficult part of the project, by far) began to distract from the creative process, and it eventually began to feel like a chore. Finally, I came to the point where I found myself saying, "crap, I still have to post tonight..." and I knew the project was no longer benefiting me. I decided to stop posting creations at that point to see how that would affect my desire to be creative, and I found myself longing to play the guitar, and I wanted to photograph everything I saw. With the expectation I had so strongly built up for myself to post something each day, I had lost some of what makes creating fun for me - spontaneity, emotional honesty, and a heartfelt desire to experience beauty that had, up until that point, never existed. As an artist who seldom finishes anything, this project helped me to accept things I was producing that weren't "perfect." Limiting my time and keeping my perfectionism in check gave me a drive to do as much with as little as possible. With these guidelines helping me understand and work around some of my greatest barriers, my photography skills improved (quite dramatically, I'd say), as did my ability to quickly record musical ideas as they skipped through my mind, and my fear of kitchens faded dramatically.  The progress I made during this project was something I couldn't have predicted. And if there's one major takeaway, it's that I will forever be on the pathway of growing my skills and exploring my personal philosophy on creating.   My most recent Create Every Day projects: (If the SoundCloud widgets either don't appear or they give you a 404, please refresh the page.)   Skinwalker's CED #212 (07.31.2013) - Upbeat Acoustic Riff Addition I doubled the riff I wrote yesterday it and added a bit more to it. Something got goofed up in mixing it, though, so I'm really not happy with the way it sounds.   Skinwalker's CED #211 (07.30.2013) - Upbeat Acoustic Riff I came up with this simple, upbeat riff today while thinking about writing some more stock-audio style tunes.   Skinwalker's CED #210 (07.29.2013) - Acoustic Folksy Rock Guitar Jam Sometimes when I'm jamming around on my guitar I set up my audio program to record everything I'm doing so I don't lose any good ideas. This folksy rock type tune is something I ended up working out during one such jam this evening.   Skinwalker's CED #209 (07.28.2013) - Goofy Faces Animated GIF While Ally and I were on the pier in Pattaya, I took a bunch of rapid fire pictures of us making goofy faces. I decided to turn these into an animated .gif so there would be eternal evidence of how loopy we both were after that draining day.

Skinwalker's CED #208 (07.27.2013) - More Bluesy Jam Tonight, I continued working on the little jam I began last night and added a riff to it. Here's where it is so far.   Skinwalker's CED #207 (07.26.2013) - Juicy, Bluesy Jam I discovered myself in a really chill mood this evening and jammed out this juicy, bluesy little jam. Skinwalker's CED #206 (07.25.2013) - Pagoda at a Wat While Ally and I were walking through Chiang Mai today, we decided to stop into a wat complex we've passed a number of times to finally check it out. I tried doing a vertical panoramic shot of one of the pagodas in the complex to see what results it would yield, and here it is.

Skinwalker's CED #205 (07.24.2013) - Evening Panorama on our Last Night in Pattaya Our last night in Pattaya provided us a fairly nice sunset, but we arrived back to the condo after the most brilliant colors had already faded. I still wanted to get a final panorama of the city looking toward the sea before we left, so I quickly snapped a few shots as the final bits of light faded from the sky. While the sky isn't as brilliant in this photo, I do like how some of the streetlights and lights on the buildings stand out.

Skinwalker's CED #204 (07.23.2013) - Pattaya Sunset Over the Sea I've really been enjoying taking panoramic shots lately, especially with such awesome sunsets here in Thailand. This is on the Bali Hai pier in Pattaya looking toward the "Pattaya City" sign, which actually lights up all fancy at night.

Skinwalker's CED #203 (07.22.2013) - People on the Ferry On the day Ally and I visited Koh Larn I took about a gazillion photos, and I've been slowly looking through them to find ones I'd like to edit and post. I had forgotten about this one as it's very rare that I'll take photos of people - I feel weird just snapping candid shots of people because of my extreme respect for and support of personal privacy (yes, I know you're reading this, NSA), but I feel even less comfortable asking people to take their photos... a rather silly dilemma, I suppose. Fortunately, I was tired enough that I overcame this fear just long enough to snap this candid shot of some of the passengers on the ferry returning to Pattaya.

Skinwalker's CED #202 (07.21.2013) - Panoramic of Pattaya Bay Here's a panoramic shot of the bay from the Bali Hai pier in Pattaya where Ally and I offloaded from the ferry after our return from the day at Koh Larn. Unfortunately, the water in this area is pretty polluted, but the greenish-blue tint of the water is still pretty stunning to this Pacific Northwesterner.

Skinwalker's CED #201 (07.20.2013) - Ferry Trip from Koh Larn to Pattaya Ally and I took a day trip to the island of Koh Larn today. The weather was complete crap almost the entire time we were on the island, but near the end of the day it began to clear up. By the time we were on the hour long ferry trip back to Pattaya, the sun came out and made for a nice sunset. I took some photos while hanging over the side of the ferry as it swayed through the swells, and found that this one captured the beauty of the sky and water quite well.

Skinwalker's CED #200 (07.19.2013) - Brian Smith at the Berlin Wall Today, my musician friend Brian Smith posted a picture on his facebook wall of himself from a recent interview, asking if somebody with Photoshop skills would crop him into a historically significant event. While my Photoshop skills are still rather nacent, I took up the challenge and came up with this for him.

Skinwalker's CED #199 (07.18.2013) - I Made An Omelette! I cooked an omelette today, and it looked/tasted awesome! For those of you who know me, you understand that my kitchen skills are an area I've been slowly working on improving. So today I learned a bit about rad omelette creation from Ally, as well as a bit about plating. I think it turned out pretty well!

Skinwalker's CED #198 (07.17.2013) - Panoramic Sunset Over Pattaya Ally and I are staying with our boss in his condo in Pattaya, and fortunately for my photographing needs, the condo faces the west where the sun sets over the ocean just beyond the cluster of tall buildings near the waterfront. I took the opportunity this evening to take a few photos of the skyline as the sun approached the horizon, and I ended up with this really nice panoramic shot.

Skinwalker's CED #197 (07.16.2013) - Night Photo at Pattaya Beach While strolling along Pattaya beach with a small group this evening, I took a few photos of the area. I'm still getting quite a lot of noise in the darker areas of the picture, but I'm fairly pleased overall since this was taken without a tripod.

Skinwalker's CED #196 (07.15.2013) - Thai Countryside at 100 kmph Ally and I spent twelve hours in a car today traveling from Chiang Mai to Pattaya. The trip was beautiful, filled with an abundance of lovely countryside and stunning skies. In between naps, I pulled out my camera and took a few photos as we zipped along the highways. Here are a few shots I took along the way - it's surprising how similar some of the countryside here looks to parts of the Pacific Northwest. With my improved knowledge of stitching photos in Photoshop, I went out to the balcony this evening and snapped some more photos of the beautiful pink sky in a panoramic sequence. Here's what I came up with for my second panoramic shot from our balcony.

Skinwalker's CED #194 (07.13.2013) - View of Chiang Mai Sky From My Balcony Here's a panoramic shot looking to the south from the balcony of my apartment in Chiang Mai. This is the first time I've used Photoshop to stitch a panoramic shot together since all my previous cheap-o point-n-shoot cameras had the function built in. I like the quality more this way, and now that I know how it does the stitching, I'll be better able to take shots in the future optimized for panorama.

Skinwalker's CED #193 (07.12.2013) - Chiang Mai Sky Near Sunset It had been a while since I had taken any photos, so the beautiful sky this evening was a perfect prompt for me to get the camera out and snap some shots. This picture was taken from the balcony of my apartment in Chiang Mai looking to the southwest.

Skinwalker's CED #192 (07.11.2013) - New Audio Program Test I'm finally forcing myself to learn to use my Macbook with Digital Performer 8 for recording. This is a rough cut of one of my solo acoustic tracks recorded and partially mixed through DP8. I've got a long way to go, but I'm hoping to get back to proficiency with DP soon so I can use it to record my acoustic album.   Skinwalker's CED #191 (07.10.2013) - New Song Idea - Verse and Chorus (Video) Here's an update to one of the most recent tunes I've been working on. I previously posted the chorus, but since then I've changed the key and added a verse part to it. This one will end up being a song that has both an acoustic version as well as a full-band version.   Skinwalker's CED #190 (07.09.2013) - More Acoustic Stuff with Improvised Vox The acoustic idea I've been playing with the past few days has started to grow on me so I decided to improvise some vocals over it. Here's what happened in one take.   Skinwalker's CED #189 (07.08.2013) - More Acoustic Stuff Chorus Although I wasn't terribly pleased with my recording yesterday, I went back to it and re-recorded it at a faster tempo and remixed it a bit. I also added a chorus guitar part that I actually like quite a bit. Here it is.   Skinwalker's CED #188 (07.07.2013) - More Acoustic Stuff Yet again, another guitar riff idea comes forth. I'm actually not that pleased with the way this one sounds, but part of what this Create Every Day project is helping me do is post things I've created, even if I have reservations about them.   Skinwalker's CED #187 (07.06.2013) - Fun New Guitar Riff with Psychedelic Vox I suddenly felt inspired to sing over the guitar riff I wrote yesterday, and I ended up creating this folksy, psychedelic vocal part.   Skinwalker's CED #186 (07.05.2013) - Fun New Guitar Riff I've been on quite a kick writing fun little riffs on my guitar lately. Here's one I came up with this evening while enjoying my guitar.   Skinwalker's CED #185 (07.04.2013) - Improvised Acoustic Tune While jamming out on my guitar today, I opened up my recording software and just hit record so I could save any ideas I came up with. I ended up improvising an entire song beginning to end, so I'm really glad I decided to record everything! Here's about a minute from the tune I busted out.   Skinwalker's CED #184 (07.03.2013) - Melodic Strumming Melody Elaborating on the riff I posted yesterday, I developed a melodic strumming melody. While mixing the track, however, I had some weird issues with the playback, mostly consisting of mild pumping between the L and R channels. I cut the compressors completely out, but the problem still persisted - hopefully, it's just something with Windows and audio drivers that will be cured with a restart.   Skinwalker's CED #183 (07.02.2013) - Light Acoustic Riff As my interest in licensing music has been growing, I've been trying to create a variety of ideas that seem fitting for different types of placements. I could imagine this riff growing into something bigger with some strings in the background and maybe a slowly building rhythm behind it. I picture it going over some inspirational commercial that starts with a montage of individual people staring off camera through a window as rain comes down outside, followed by the inspirational voiceover and the imagery slowly changing to happier people eventually all running through fields in the sun. And of course, it would be advertising something like an oil company.   Skinwalker's CED #182 (07.01.2013) - mötæ Image Video for "Ascending to Autumn" It is with both happiness and a bit of sadness that I'm posting the final image video from the mötæ full-length album. While I know these aren't super fancy, I've had a lot of fun making them and I really hope people enjoy them. The entire album playlist is now on YouTube for streaming. This is the 11th and final track on the album, "Ascending to Autumn." Download the entire album on a donation only basis at http://motae.bandcamp.com/   Skinwalker's CED #181 (06.30.2013) - A Guitar Riff - Again - Delay Riff I've been a bit hooked on this recent guitar idea I came up with, so I've continued adding to it. I started writing this riff to go over the djenty riff I posted yesterday, but after adding some delay and lfo phasing to it, I really like how it stands alone.   Skinwalker's CED #180 (06.29.2013) - A Guitar Riff - Again - Djenty Riff I really enjoyed writing the fun polyrhythmic riff I posted on Thursday (CED #178), so I kept playing with the idea and developed a dirty djenty riff to go with it. I'm posting the riff by itself without the backing guitar to make it easier to follow. This one was really fun to write. I hope you enjoy it!   Skinwalker's CED #179 (06.28.2013) - Heavier Riff for New Acoustic Tune In continuing to elaborate on the acoustic djenty rhythmic idea I posted a few days ago (CED #176), I wrote this riff that uses the same chord sequence with a heavier drive.   Skinwalker's CED #178 (06.27.2013) - A Guitar Riff - Again - Fun Polyrhythm I kept playing with the riff I wrote yesterday and developed a fun polyrhythmic line over top of it in a somewhat djent styling. The pattern is actually really simple, but it sounds kind of complex - can you figure it out?   Skinwalker's CED #177 (06.26.2013) - A Guitar Riff - Again It seems that every time I pick up my guitar another song idea pops into my head. It's nice having my recording set up so handy so I can record all the random ideas I have - here's what came to mind tonight.   Skinwalker's CED #176 (06.25.2013) - Djenty Rhythmic Line for New Acoustic Riff Over the past couple years I've been happy to see the balance that many djent musicians achieve between rhythmic complexity, solid drive, and emotive melodies. I've always aimed for these things in my acoustic music, and since I'm focusing less on writing music I can perform live, I'm now able to play around with fun syncopation and counterpoint that I found much harder to incorporate before. Here's a djenty riff I wrote over top of the straightforward acoustic chords I recorded previously. I hope to eventually record this tune with a full band and crunchy guitars to really make this line pop out.   Skinwalker's CED #175 (06.24.2013) - mötæ Image Video for "A Simple Farewell" Here's yet another image video from the mötæ full-length album. This is the second-to-last track on the album, "A Simple Farewell." This tune was composed by Michael Bode and was performed by him with Orin Clark and Brian Fitzsimmons.
