Skinwalker’s Create Every Day #32 – February 01, 2013 – Upon the Hillside (Complete Song)

Here it is! My first folk/country/western song! This started out as a joke, but I’m actually really happy with how it turned out. It took way more time to write, record, and mix than I expected it to, but I definitely learned a ton in the process, and I’m rather pleased with the final product. The (incredibly cheesy) lyrics are below.

Upon the hillside is where I reside
Upon the hillside is where I reside
My cabin keeps me warm and safe from the rain and winds outside
Upon the hillside is where I reside

I look down to the valley below
I gaze upon the city from my window
But the hustle and bustle life I do not desire
I’d rather be here with you curled up next to my fire

(Awesome, right?)

Skinwalker’s Create Every Day #33 – February 02, 2013 – Merlin the Magic Cat

One of the cats that resides at my house is named Merlin. I like to sing him songs about how magical he is. Here’s one of those songs.

Merlin the Magic Cat.

Merlin the Magic Cat.

Skinwalker’s Create Every Day #34 – February 03, 2013 – The Postal Service District Sleeps Vocal Cover (Bass & Drums)

For some reason, The Postal Service’s District Sleeps Alone Tonight popped into my head today, so I decided to start working on a vocal cover of it. I’m not sure how far into the song I’ll get as this is more just an exercise in learning new recording techniques, but we’ll see.

Skinwalker’s Create Every Day #35 – February 04, 2013 – The Postal Service District Sleeps Vocal Cover (First Verse)

After some encouragement from a good friend, I decided to spend a bit more time on the Postal Service vocal cover, and I’ve worked up through the first verse. After listening closely to the rest of the track, I’m a bit intimidated about how challenging parts of it are going to be, but I may slowly chip away at the rest of the song in later Create Every Day projects.

Skinwalker’s Create Every Day #36 – February 05, 2013 – Ambient Trance Idea v2

I revisited the ambient trance song idea I came up with a while ago and added some additional elements and rhythmic parts to it. There aren’t any vocals on this one yet as I’m going to re-record them. I’m getting a little over-modulation on the kick still, so I’ll have to tweak that a bit.

Skinwalker’s Create Every Day #37 – February 06, 2013 – The Postal Service District Sleeps Vocal Cover (Beat-Boxing)

With continual encouragement from some great friends, I’ve decided to keep plugging away at the Postal Service vocal cover song. I didn’t really like the way the beat-boxing was sounding, so I recorded samples of myself that I could mix down, then copy and paste at the exact moments for each drum beat… it took me about 6 hours to get everything recorded, clipped, organized, mixed, and sampled the way I wanted it to be, but I really like the way the “drums” are sounding now.

Skinwalker’s Create Every Day #38 – February 07, 2013 – Yet Another A Cappella Idea

I haven’t had a stereo in my car since I bought it four years ago. Most people wonder how that doesn’t drive me crazy, but I love it – long drives are meditative to me, and it’s where I come up with a lot of my song ideas. This is an idea I conjured up while driving through the rain recently, so I decided to record it for today’s Create Every Day.

Skinwalker’s Create Every Day #39 – February 08, 2013 – Merlin is a Wizard Cat

Happy Friday! I was feeling some soul and spice this morning, and since people seemed to enjoy my Merlin the Magic Cat tune, I felt inspired to record another one of the songs I sing to Merlin when the rest of my roommates aren’t home. Here’s a little tune about Merlin and how he’s a wizard and a cat… and therefore, a wizard cat.

Merlin is a Wizard Cat.

Merlin is a Wizard Cat.

Skinwalker’s Create Every Day #40 – February 09, 2013 – Skinwalker’s Thailand Story-Travel-Time-Guide!

Anything involving travel (thinking about it, talking about it, researching it, or doing it) is inspirational to me. So while I was making some travel plans today, I came up with an idea for a sort of story-time/travel-guide about my experiences in Thailand. I’m calling it Skinwalker’s Thailand Story-Travel-Time-Guide! I’ve written an introductory blog post with some more details on what inspired me to start the project in the first place, as well as what I envision the series of mini-articles to generally be about. Check out the post on my home page, or link directly to the post at

I hope to have my first mini-article written and posted within the next few days, and I’ll aim to have at least one mini-article from the series up each week as part of my Create Every Day project.

Skinwalker’s Create Every Day #41 – February 10, 2013 – Funky Latin Guitar Jam

Sometimes I feel a bit funky and spicy. This is the type of guitar line that happens when I’m in those moods.

Skinwalker’s Create Every Day #42 – February 11, 2013 – District Sleeps Vocal Cover (New Bass Parts)

This song is becoming a much greater endeavor than I ever imagined it would. I re-recorded all the bass parts and worked on mixing it all a bit more. I’ve also got the bass parts for the chorus done now… I’m trying to closely replicate the tone from the original song, but I didn’t realize when I started that this song is actually rather complex. Curse you, Ben Gibbard!!!

Skinwalker’s Create Every Day #43 – February 12, 2013 – mötæ EP Artwork and Lyrics Digital Booklet

After hours and hours of designing this booklet and getting Photoshop to compress the PDFs to a size that would fit as an attachment through WordPress, I’m pleased to share this digital booklet with the artwork and lyrics from mötæ’s 2010 EP. I’ll post more about the EP tomorrow, but for now, enjoy the digital booklet!

mötæ is now on BandCamp!

I’ve been grinding away non-stop on music related things these past few days, and I’ve remastered the 2010 mötæ 5-track EP as well as designed a BandCamp page for our music! In celebration, I’ve put up the remastered version of the song “gist” for free download, and I’ve created a code for half off the digital version of the full 5-track EP, making it $2 for the remastered album including the digital artwork and lyrics booklet! The discount code is 2DollarMotaeEP – which can be applied at the checkout stage.

I hope you enjoy the band page and the music!

Skinwalker’s Create Every Day #45 – February 14, 2013 – In celebration of love, all mötæ music is now FREE on BandCamp!!!

My good friends and bandmates in mötæ and I have invested much of our hearts, time, energy, and money into creating what we hoped would be some really beautiful, artistic music. I personally believe we achieved that goal. I also believe that part of the creative process is sharing that which you’ve created, and I want everybody who so desires to be able to hear and have the art we created together, so I’ve decided to post both of our albums on BandCamp with no minimum purchase price so that anybody can own and listen to the music regardless of their financial situation.

For the creative portion of today’s Create Every Day, I hope I’m not only able to create some smiles by giving the music away at whatever price people choose to pay, but I also spent some more time working in Photoshop and on the website creating a layout that I’m really pleased with. Please check out our page at and feel free to share the link with anybody you think would enjoy the gift of music!

Happy Day of Love from me and the rest of mötæ!!!

Skinwalker’s Create Every Day #46 – February 15, 2013 – Light Acoustic Guitar Piece

Over the past year, I’ve become at peace with myself and completely in love with life, broadening the scope on my musical writing preferences. I was in a very zen mood today, so I composed this light, melodic acoustic guitar piece. I think I’ll definitely come back to this piece and explore the atmosphere and mood I can create with it with some more time and energy.

Skinwalker’s Create Every Day #47 – February 16, 2013 – District Sleeps Vocal Cover (Chorus)

I spent some more time on the Postal Service vocal cover song and got parts recorded and partially mixed for the chorus. Check it!

Skinwalker’s Create Every Day #48 – February 17, 2013 – Silver Falls – Lower South Falls Paper Plate and Marker Sketch

Today, my friend Ally and I went for a hike at Silver Falls near Silverton, Oregon. I took a bunch of photos with my super cheap camera, and I decided I wanted to use one of them for my Create Every Day project. However, after much frustration trying to edit the photos and find one that looked decent, Ally suggested I color a picture with crayons. I liked the idea a lot. While I couldn’t find any crayons, I managed to find some old metallic felt-tip markers I had in middle school, so I grabbed a paper plate and started sketching a picture of the Lower South Falls (my favorite of the falls). Here’s what I came up with!

Skinwalker’s Create Every Day #49 – February 18, 2013 – District Sleeps Vocal Cover (New Verse + Mixing)

I’ve continued working on accurately recreating the tone and style of the original Postal Service song, leading me to re-record the verse lead vocal line. I also did a lot more mixing and balancing to try to get the mix closer to the sound of the original. I think it’s coming along nicely. Next is to get those bloop-beep noises in the chorus…

Skinwalker’s Create Every Day #50 – February 19, 2013 – Acoustic Guitar Solo Riff

Here’s a rough recording of a solo acoustic guitar riff that’s part of a full song I’m aiming to begin recording soon. It was written somewhat as an exercise in finger picking with a slightly classical styling.

Skinwalker’s Create Every Day #51 – February 20, 2013 – Practicing Dubstep Sounds

In learning how to create more dubstep style sounds using FL Studio, I tried to recreate some sounds that I’ve heard in some Skrillex songs (yes, I like Skrillex – please don’t hate me) and tried to recreate my own similar sounds. I learned a bit about using an envelope filter on the high pitched wub sound to vary the tempo of the wubbing… if that makes any sense. And I also played with the WOW plugin, which creates the big vowel sounds that sound like a robot vomiting.

Skinwalker’s Create Every Day #52 – February 21, 2013 – Another Acoustic Riff

I was jiving for some jam time on my guitar this evening, and I came up with this fun little acoustic riff that I decided to record for my Create Every Day project.

Skinwalker’s Create Every Day #53 – February 22, 2013 – I Made Food And It Tasted Good!

I’ve posted a couple edible creations over the past couple months, and tonight I’m adding another! I made curry steak with ingredients that came entirely from dumpsters. Yes, it was all dumpster-dived food. And yes, as my friend Ally pointed out, I curried cow. What can I say? It was what we had available and it sounded really good.

While I still don’t consider myself an amazing cook by any means, I am very pleased with the way this dish turned out. The steak was slow-cooked with onions, masala curry sauce, and a bit of cilantro salsa on top, making it extremely tender, juicy, and full of super awesome flavor. Check out the crappy cell-phone pic to get an idea of how it looked.

Slow-cooked curry steak that was oh, so delicious in my mouth.

Skinwalker’s Create Every Day #54 – February 23, 2013 – Another Acoustic Riff v2

I went back to the acoustic riff I started a couple days ago and developed some rhythmic parts for it. I’ve got quite a few ideas about where to go with this one, so we’ll see what happens.

Skinwalker’s Create Every Day #55 – February 24, 2013 – Acoustic Song Beats

I’ve recently been very inspired by the game Bastion, which has an amazing soundtrack, as well as fantastic artwork and gameplay. The acoustic riff that I wrote a few days ago has been running through my head like crazy, and I’ve been trying to figure out what to do with it, so today I imported the idea into Fruity Loops and began writing a beat for it. The composer of the Bastion soundtrack, Darren Korb, has my dream job – composing and recording music for video games – so I decided to take a little inspiration from his style and attempt to write something that I think would be fitting for the types of games I enjoy playing. Check out where it has come so far!

Skinwalker’s Create Every Day #56 – February 25, 2013 – Acoustic Song Chorus

I’ve really been enjoying the newest song I’ve been working on, so I decided to write a chorus guitar part for it. I wanted to mix it up a bit, so I played with the time signature and threw in a couple 7/8 riffs to offset the simplicity of the chord structure, and also to add a somewhat jarring moment since it’s all pretty straightforward and jammy up to that point. Next is to develop some beats for this riff!

Skinwalker’s Create Every Day #57 – February 26, 2013 – Hard Cider!!!

I made hard cider! My friend Ally and I love dumpster diving, and we recently came across another amazing hoard of apples. If you’ve been following my Create Every Day project from the beginning, you may recall my excitement over making home-made applesauce (Week 2, Create Every Day #14). Well, I’m just as excited about this apple creation, which included a huge variety of different apple types and even a bit of grape juice that I also pressed to add a bit of sweetness and color. I’ve only tasted a bit of it so far, and I’m quite enjoying the flavor – I’ll have to get back to y’all about the effects.

This here is some hard apple cider made entirely from apples (and some grapes) from dumpsters.

Skinwalker’s Create Every Day #58 – February 27, 2013 – Acoustic Song Chorus with Drums and Bass

The newest song that I’ve been working on has provided me an awesome opportunity to continue experimenting with my composition abilities. I’ve been working my butt off on it, and I’m happy to say I’ve come up with some pretty fun stuff for the chorus drum beat and bass line – I decided to incorporate some drum and bass style drums mixed with a bit of prog rock, and I’m pretty happy with how it’s sounding. The goal is to have the entire song done and ready to post on the 1st of March, so I’m gonna keep busting away at it so I can meet that goal!

(To hear the progression of the idea, please check out posts #52-56 in Week 8.)

Skinwalker’s Create Every Day #59 – February 28, 2013 – Skinwalker’s Thailand Story-Travel-Time-Guide – Getting Around Within Cities Part I

Today, I wrote my first mini-article for my Skinwalker’s Thailand Story-Travel-Time-Guide series! Check it out here!
