Month 6: June

Create Every Day Projects for June, 2013 (If the SoundCloud widgets either don't appear or they give you a 404, please refresh the page.) Skinwalker's Create Every Day #152 (06.01.2013) - "Inspiring" Acoustic Riff I've been looking into music licensing a bit lately, and I'm trying to develop a few tunes that I think I could shop to different licensing agencies. This is a rough idea I whipped up for an "inspiring" feeling. I'll flesh this out soon and post what I come up with as the idea progresses.   Skinwalker's Create Every Day #153 (06.02.2013) - Night Photos I went out tonight with the hopes of capturing some cool night shots, and I got a few photos that I think turned out fairly well. I'm still learning my camera's settings, so hopefully my shots will keep getting better, slowly but surely. This area is about ten minutes from our apartment on the inside of the northeast corner of the moat that surrounds the Old City in Chiang Mai.

Skinwalker's Create Every Day #154 (06.03.2013) - White Temple and Guardian of the Gate Today, Allison and I went on our first visa run to the Burmese border with our friends, Neil and Mika. On our trip, we stopped at the White Temple near Chiang Rai and poked around for a bit. The temple is pretty wild - it's all white and covered in outstanding, ornate, cryptic sculptures, and the paintings on the inside are some of the most interesting artwork I've seen (no pictures allowed inside). Here are a couple of the photos I took during our little side adventure there.

Skinwalker's Create Every Day #155 (06.04.2013) - Black House The White Temple near Chiang Rai is a rather popular tourist attraction. However, there is a lesser known and equally stunning attraction near the city called Baan Dam (Black House), which is a collection of a few dozen black buildings created by the national artist, Thawan Duchanee. We arrived just before the grounds closed to the public for the day, so I didn't get to take many photos, but here are a couple shots of two of the many beautiful buildings on the grounds.

Skinwalker's Create Every Day #156 (06.05.2013) - Happy Birthday, Mom! (In the Style of "Batman") My mother always jokes that I got my musical talent from her because she taught me how to play the Batman theme song on the guitar when I was a kid. But whether that's what inspired me to become a musician isn't what matters - the support I was given to do what I wanted to do, regardless of the practicality of my endeavors, is what allows me to pursue this creative life. So, since it's my mom's birthday today, I thought I'd customize the Batman song she taught me so many years ago as a gift back to her. Happy birthday, mom!   Skinwalker's Create Every Day #157 (06.06.2013) - Night Photo Above the Moat I've begun playing around a bit with aperture and shutter speed in attempts to get some good quality night photos. I'm still getting a bit of noise and a lack of clarity, but I think the shots are improving in general (nobody sees the stuff I don't post). This photo was taken from atop the northeast corner of the wall that surrounds the Old City in Chiang Mai looking south over the moat.

Skinwalker's Create Every Day #158 (06.07.2013) - Peacock! I took a picture of a peacock. Well, I took several, but I think this one most accurately captured the gist of our exchange.

Skinwalker's Create Every Day #159 (06.08.2013) - mötæ Image Video for "Borrowed Sleep" Here's another mötæ image video! This time, it's for the 8th track from our full-length album, titled "Borrowed Sleep."   Skinwalker's Create Every Day #160 (06.09.2013) - mötæ Album Download Card A friend of mine is going to be road-tripping to a ton of festivals in the US this summer, and he volunteered to distribute free mötæ EPs as well as download cards for our full-length album at the festivals he attends. This is the design I worked up for the card. (If you think it sucks, please send me constructive feedback so I can fix it before I send the order in.)

Skinwalker's Create Every Day #161 (06.10.2013) - Happy Whistle Snap Guitar Thing I've recently begun researching music licensing and the types of songs that are popular right now. In an attempt to mimic some of the popular styles I've heard, I wrote this little tune as a test run. I'll have to re-record the whole thing before I send it to any licensing agencies, but I had fun working up the general idea. Could you imagine this in the background of some commercial?   Skinwalker's Create Every Day #162 (06.11.2013) - mötæ Album Download Card Side 2 I spent a bunch of time researching design stuff and decided to make the mötæ album download cards double-sided. This is the second side to the cards, which I think looks pretty nifty. The dark grey lettering on the bottom is also going to have a gloss coating to it (along with the tree and mötæ logo), so it will stand out quite a bit. It's my first time designing with spot-UV printing in mind, so it was quite stressful, but I'm excited to see how they turn out.
The tree, mötæ logo, and web addresses on the bottom will all be covered in a UV gloss as well. Gettin' snazzy!

Skinwalker's Create Every Day #163 (06.12.2013) - mötæ Album Download Card Update and Spot UV Coating With some great advice from my designer friend, Will Moyer, and plenty of support from Ally, I did some updates to the mötæ album download card and came up with a cleaner and more functional design. The text looks really light because those areas are going to have a gloss coating over them, making them pop out. The black and white cards show where the gloss will be - any place that's black will have the glossy coating, and the rest of the card will be a matte finish. Here are the final designs being sent for printing.

Skinwalker's Create Every Day #164 (06.13.2013) - Training Grounds Jam I picked up my guitar today and immediately had the urge to write another riff for my non-existent video game soundtrack. I came up with this funky, bluesy little riff that makes me think of a character in the training grounds trying to learn new skills or something of the sort.   Skinwalker's Create Every Day #165 (06.14.2013) - Training Grounds Jam - Part II I added another part to the "Training Grounds Jam" I posted yesterday. I was aiming to create a riff that would change the dynamics and mood just slightly while retaining the same rhythmic pattern and feel. This one will go in the catalog of riffs for my non-existent video game soundtrack.   Skinwalker's Create Every Day #166 (06.15.2013) - Another Guitar Riff One nice thing about our current living set-up is that it's easy to pick up the guitar and record ideas. This idea was a part of a larger set of ideas for guitar riffs that I came up with tonight.   Skinwalker's Create Every Day #167 (06.16.2013) - Revised Riff from an Old Song I've been going over some of my older acoustic tunes lately in an attempt to remember how I played half of them. This riff is from a song I wrote in high school for the band I was in at the time called Nine L (three of us later ended up in mötæ together). I'm trying to play it as true to the original as I can while translating it to acoustic guitar from electric and giving it a touch of maturity. I'll eventually work out the whole tune and maybe provide it as a "bonus" or something when I finally record my full-length acoustic album.   Skinwalker's Create Every Day #168 (06.17.2013) - Another Revised Riff from an Old Song I felt like working through more of this tune today, so I picked up the guitar and fiddled around with some harmonics and other fun techniques to solidify the intro riff. Here's what I got.   Skinwalker's CED #169 (06.18.2013) - Melodic Acoustic, Palm-Muted, Delay Riff I really enjoy the sound of melodic, palm-muted guitar lines with delay, so I wrote one tonight based on an idea I had floating around in my head today. I'll probably add to this soon.   Skinwalker's CED #170 (06.19.2013) - 2nd Part for Acoustic, Palm-Muted, Delay Riff This concept was stuck in my head today so I decided to work on it a bit more. I added a second line to the original muted, delay riff I came up with yesterday and did a small amount of mixing to it all.   Skinwalker's CED #171 (06.20.2013) - Full Melodic Acoustic, Palm-Muted, Delay Riff I wanted to fill out these riffs and make this idea more cohesive, so I added some light, backing chords to the piece. I like how this is sounding - I think it will become a similar style song to what I've been working on with "Hold Up the Mirror."   Skinwalker's CED #172 (06.21.2013) - Rough Lyrics and Melody for Most Recent Riff (VIDEO!) People often tell me that if I started posting little clips of the songs I'm working on to YouTube, it would be good for "getting my music out there." I'm pretty unsure about doing this, but I decided to give it a shot with this new song idea I've been messing around with. So here's a clip of me working out rough vocals over the chords for this newest song idea.   Skinwalker's CED #173 (06.22.2013) - Revised Chorus from an Old Song Here's a slightly updated chorus guitar line from the old tune I've been revising. Oh, so dark and angsty was I at 16.   Skinwalker's CED #174 (06.23.2013) - mötæ Image Video for "Undigenous"< Here's another image video from the mötæ full-length album. This is the 9th track on the album, "Undigenous." Download the entire album with no minimum donation at http://motae.bandcamp.com/   Skinwalker's CED #175 (06.24.2013) - mötæ Image Video for "A Simple Farewell" Here's yet another image video from the mötæ full-length album. This is the second-to-last track on the album, "A Simple Farewell." This tune was composed by Michael Bode and was performed by him with Orin Clark and Brian Fitzsimmons. Big thanks to those rad dudes for sharing their time and talents to help us out! Download the entire album with no minimum donation at http://motae.bandcamp.com/   Skinwalker's CED #176 (06.25.2013) - Djenty Rhythmic Line for New Acoustic Riff Over the past couple years I've been happy to see the balance that many djent musicians achieve between rhythmic complexity, solid drive, and emotive melodies. I've always aimed for these things in my acoustic music, and since I'm focusing less on writing music I can perform live, I'm now able to play around with fun syncopation and counterpoint that I found much harder to incorporate before. Here's a djenty riff I wrote over top of the straightforward acoustic chords I recorded previously. I hope to eventually record this tune with a full band and crunchy guitars to really make this line pop out.   Skinwalker's CED #177 (06.26.2013) - A Guitar Riff - Again It seems that every time I pick up my guitar another song idea pops into my head. It's nice having my recording set up so handy so I can record all the random ideas I have - here's what came to mind tonight.   Skinwalker's CED #178 (06.27.2013) - A Guitar Riff - Again - Fun Polyrhythm I kept playing with the riff I wrote yesterday and developed a fun polyrhythmic line over top of it in a somewhat djent styling. The pattern is actually really simple, but it sounds kind of complex - can you figure it out?   Skinwalker's CED #179 (06.28.2013) - Heavier Riff for New Acoustic Tune In continuing to elaborate on the acoustic djenty rhythmic idea I posted a few days ago (CED #176), I wrote this riff that uses the same chord sequence with a heavier drive.   Skinwalker's CED #180 (06.29.2013) - A Guitar Riff - Again - Djenty Riff I really enjoyed writing the fun polyrhythmic riff I posted on Thursday (CED #178), so I kept playing with the idea and developed a dirty djenty riff to go with it. I'm posting the riff by itself without the backing guitar to make it easier to follow. This one was really fun to write. I hope you enjoy it!   Skinwalker's CED #181 (06.30.2013) - A Guitar Riff - Again - Delay Riff I've been a bit hooked on this recent guitar idea I came up with, so I've continued adding to it. I started writing this riff to go over the djenty riff I posted yesterday, but after adding some delay and lfo phasing to it, I really like how it stands alone.
